    Matching Made Simple

    Date: December 18, 2024

Is a Bone Marrow Transplant in Your Future? You may not think so right now, but it may well be. The good news is that many expert transplant centers are coming up the learning curve nicely. The survival statistics are improving with each new development. We will be publishing a series of articles on the website on this important subject, including detailed articles on how to navigate the maze, get yourself the best possible chance of coming out the other end with a full cure.

Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplants work better with closer matches. "HLA matching" of the potential donor with the recipient is the first step in allogeneic stem cell transplants, whether the stem cells are obtained from an adult donor or from umbilical cord blood. With increasing frequency, stem cell transplantation is viewed as an early alternative for those with aggressive disease or high risk profiles, especially for younger patients.

As things stand today, allo transplants (mini or the full blown variety, adult donor or cord blood) are the only procedures presently available to CLL patients that have the ability to actually cure a percentage of patients. Familiarity with the concept of tissue typing will be useful as you embark upon the transplant journey. Our latest article Matching Made Simple takes some of the mystery out of this process.

    Be well,

    Chaya
